Butterfly Wings: a how to project for a summer day.

Last week I held a Littles Art Camp where we made butterfly wings and the campers absolutely loved them! This is a very fun and pretty easy project to do at home, and you probably have most everything that you need for it. Below are the instructions in case you want to give it a go with your little one. They will love it.

Step 1. This is the perfect project if you have a large cardboard box laying around. Simply draw a butterfly shape and cut it out. I used a box cutter, but strong scissors will work.

Step 2. Let your little one paint the wings. They will love this! I had them paint one side. Laid it outside to dry, then had them paint the other side. I used tempera paint, but whatever you have will work.

Step 3. Have your child draw some simple shapes on the wings. (You can draw them if your child is very young). Then use a box cutter to cut out the shapes. Next, take some colored acetate or cellophane and cut them just slightly larger than the cut out shapes. (You can buy colored cellophane in rolls in the baking isle or sheets of colored acetate in the craft section of a hobby/art store.) I recommend using different colors, it makes the finished product more colorful and fun.

Step 4. I taped each shape where I was going to glue it (This step is optional. I did this because I was working on many wings at once! I would have skipped this step if I was doing just one). Then I used a hot glue gun to glue them in place. It went pretty fast and the hot glue gun worked great!!

Step 5. I did not get a good picture of this. But the next step is to make the loops for the arm holes. I used my box cutter or scissors to make 4 incisions where I would thread the ribbon through. I cut one large stand of ribbon (about 4 ft) and threaded it through in such a way that the front had two arm holes and I tied it in the back. It's not important that this is done exactly one way, you basically just need two arm holes in the front. Here is a view from the back.

Step 6. Take them outside on a sunny day. The sunlight will shine through the colored cellophane onto the concrete and it's magical. Watch your little one light up with wonder.
